Author's View on the FAMILY FARM TAX
Land is not money.
The cost of agricultural land on family farms has been driven sky high by external investors but in no way reflects farm income. The rural working class are being taxed on land at its inflated price but they dont earn enough to pay IHT .
Unless the family farm tax is reversed, our farms will start to disappear. Swathes of countryside will be sold to the highest bidder. As a country, we will lose capacity to feed ourselves and we will squander a bank of knowledge and strength that made us resilient, even when times were hard.
Rachel Francis is an author. Her new novel, The Reporter, is set on Dartmoor.
